Philosophy

Stem & Stone is a study in material, form, and perception

Working with gemstones, pearls, metals, and geological fomrs we create and curate pieces that explore the relationship between the visible and the invisible—the forms we see and the forces that shape them.

Our collections are informed by geology, ecology, travel, photography, and contemplative practice. They draw inspiration from landscapes, mineral specimens, art history, travel and the quiet moments of observation that reveal unexpected complexity in ordinary things.

We are interested in materials that carry evidence of their own becoming. A crystal formed over millions of years. A pearl built layer by layer within a shell. A stone shaped by pressure, heat, movement, and time.

These processes remain present within the material long after they have ended. Jewelry becomes a way of carrying those stories forward. The design is never intended to compete with the material. Instead, it creates space for the material to be seen more clearly.

Stem & Stone emerged from a lifelong fascination with natural systems and the ways people create meaning through their relationship with the world around them.

Geology. Ecology. Color. Travel. Photography. Symbolism. Ritual.

A stone collected on a journey. The shifting color of a pearl in changing light. A landscape shaped over geological time. A daily practice that brings awareness to the present moment. What changes is rarely the object itself. What changes is our perception of it. Our collections exist in that space.

Our designs are intentionally uncomplicated—objects that move easily between landscapes, cities, studios, airports, meetings, and daily rituals.

They are designed to be lived with.

The longer we keep certain objects close, the more meaning they accumulate.

What role does symbolism play in your work?

We are interested in both what materials are and what they have meant.

A geologist may see mineral formation. A collector may see rarity. A traveler may remember a place. A practitioner may associate a stone with a particular quality, intention, or state of mind.

These perspectives can coexist. Across cultures and throughout history, stones have been collected, carried, worn, gifted, and incorporated into ritual. They have served as symbols of protection, grounding, transformation, memory, and connection.

We make no claims about metaphysical properties. What interests us is the enduring human impulse to find meaning within material.

The space between science and symbolism remains one of the most fascinating places to explore.

Are all of your pieces handmade?

Stem & Stone includes both studio-made and carefully sourced pieces.

Some originate in our Pacific Northwest studio. Others are selected from artisans, vintage collections, and independent makers whose work aligns with our approach to material and form.

Whether discovered, assembled, or designed, each piece is selected for its ability to contribute to a larger conversation about material, perception, and time.

Where do your materials come from?

Our materials are sourced through a combination of gemstone suppliers, mineral dealers, vintage collections, lapidaries, artisans, and independent makers.

Whenever possible, we research and share the geological origins of the materials we use.

Natural materials often travel through many hands and many places over time. When exact provenance is known, we share it. When it is not, we prefer transparency over speculation.

Why do stones and pearls vary from piece to piece?

Because nature does not produce editions.

No two stones, crystals, or pearls are identical.

Variations in color, inclusions, luster, texture, and form are not imperfections. They are records of formation.

They are evidence that the material has a history.

We consider these variations among the most compelling qualities a piece can possess.

What metals do you use?

Our collections primarily feature sterling silver, gold-filled materials, gold vermeil, and select solid gold components.

Specific material details are listed within each product description.

Are your pearls natural?

We work with freshwater pearls, vintage saltwater pearls, and Japanese Keishi pearls, among others.

Pearls occupy a unique place within the collection because they embody transformation so visibly.

Layer by layer, an organic response becomes an object of remarkable complexity.

Like stones, each pearl carries its own character, shape, and history.

Do you accept returns?

Unused items may be returned within 14 days of delivery in their original condition.

Custom, personalized, or one-of-a-kind pieces may not be eligible for return.

If questions arise, we encourage you to reach out. We believe thoughtful objects deserve thoughtful service.

How should I care for my jewelry?

Jewelry should be stored in a dry environment when not being worn.

Avoid prolonged exposure to water, perfumes, lotions, and household chemicals.

Sterling silver naturally develops a patina over time. Some people choose to preserve it. Others prefer to polish it away.

Both approaches are valid.

Natural materials should be treated with care and protected from unnecessary impacts.

Do you create custom pieces?

Yes, We are particularly interested in projects involving meaningful stones, unusual materials, and thoughtful restraint in design.

What do you hope people experience when they wear a Stem & Stone piece?

Every piece begins as matter shaped by forces larger and older than ourselves.

Perhaps carrying it is a reminder that we, too, are shaped by time, experience, and transformation.

Subheading

Each piece begins with the material — singular stones sourced across the world: Herkimer Diamonds from Afghanistan, Brazilian Agate, Vintage Japanese saltwater pearls, their nacre formed slowly over time.

Chosen for origin, structure, and the way they hold light.

There has always been an affinity for stones — objects of time, given and received, carrying history, memory, and a quiet sense of the sacred. Collected over time, passed between generations — a way of staying close to the natural world, and to one another.

In their color and form, the materials reflect a kind of natural authorship —the milky iridescnce of opalite, the luster and glow of vintage nacre of pearls built through time, the dense, reflective black of Obsidian formed in cooling lava, the banded structure of Agate recording gradual mineral shifts. These are not applied qualities, but inherent — expressions of process, pressure, and duration.

Our designs our crafted and curated sourcing stones from all over the world from ethical sources. Used for adornment or frequency, pearls and stones share a universal resonance in the cycle of life. They are reminders of the ethereal essence of nature, in both its processes and expression.
